Spam traps are addresses used to identify senders who email without consent or list hygiene. Learn types of spam traps and how to avoid them.
A spam trap is an email address used by mailbox providers or anti-spam organizations to identify senders with poor list practices. If you email spam traps, it can signal that you’re sending without proper consent or that your list hygiene is weak.
Spam traps can be pristine (never used for signups and planted on pages to catch scrapers) or recycled (old abandoned addresses repurposed). Hitting them increases the risk of filtering, blocks, and reputation damage.
To avoid spam traps, don’t buy lists, use confirmed opt-in where possible, remove hard bounces, and sunset inactive contacts. Clean acquisition and ongoing hygiene are the best defenses.
